Sizes to include in the ICO

Use cases and practical choices

Web developers can create browser-tab icons, and internal systems or desktop applications can use multi-size ICO resources. Confirm whether the destination expects ICO, PNG or SVG. This page exports ICO; it does not generate an entire website icon manifest or configuration.

How to make a favicon ICO

  1. Prepare a near-square PNG or JPG with a clear subject. Crop a very wide or tall source to a square first to avoid distortion when it is scaled into square icon sizes.
  2. Select the image, then choose one or more sizes: 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 or 256 pixels. At least one size must remain checked.
  3. Generate and download the ICO. The selected sizes are stored together inside one ICO file rather than downloaded as separate files.
  4. Install the icon in the intended site or app and inspect it at a small displayed size. If an old icon remains visible, check its reference path and cache before converting again.

Favicon ICO FAQ

What source image should I use for a website favicon?

Use a simple square image with clear edges and enough source resolution for the largest selected size. Poster-like artwork and tiny lettering are hard to recognize at 16 pixels. Transparent PNG can preserve transparent corners; inspect the result against both light and dark backgrounds.

How can one ICO contain several sizes?

ICO is a container that can hold multiple icon images. Applications can select an appropriate entry for their display size. This tool puts the checked sizes in a single downloaded file. Extra sizes increase file size and do not automatically redesign artwork for a tiny display.

Why does a rectangular source look squashed?

Each selected output size is square, so scaling a non-square source directly into it can distort proportions. Crop the source to a 1:1 composition with the image cropper before generating the ICO. Choosing a larger icon size alone does not solve a composition problem.

Why is my website still showing the old icon?

Check that the generated file is reachable and that the page or site configuration points to the right path. Browsers, pinned tabs and shortcuts can cache older icons. This tool creates the file; it does not update your website configuration or clear those caches.
