PDF Password Tool
Add a password to a PDF or remove a password you already know. Encryption runs locally. Nothing is uploaded.

Use cases and practical choices
Add an opening password before sharing a document, or remove a known password to prepare a copy for merging or page extraction. This does not provide password recovery, digital signing, content redaction or recipient account management; choose it for the specific password operation you need.
Encrypt or unlock a PDF locally
- Protect a PDF with a user password
- Remove a password when you know the current one
- Local processing with no file transfer
How to password protect a PDF
- Choose Encrypt or Decrypt and select one PDF. Encryption adds an opening password; decryption requires the existing password you already know.
- Enter the opening password, and optionally an owner password when encrypting. For decryption, enter the current opening password. Check it carefully: the page does not store or recover it for you.
- Run the selected operation and download the result. To change an existing opening password, decrypt first and then encrypt the downloaded copy; this page does not have simultaneous old/new password fields.
- Open the download in a separate PDF viewer. Confirm encrypted output asks for the password and decrypted output behaves as expected. Retain the original and your own necessary password record before sharing.
PDF password FAQ
What is the difference between opening and owner passwords?
An opening password controls access to the document. An owner password relates to document permissions and is not an account system or a guarantee against copying. Viewers can enforce permissions differently. The current interface has no detailed print/edit permission controls, so do not assume an unexposed policy was configured.
Can it recover a forgotten password or change one directly?
It cannot recover or crack an unknown password. Decryption requires the correct current password. To replace a known opening password, decrypt and download a copy, then encrypt that copy with the new password. There are no simultaneous old-password and new-password fields.
Does encryption stop screenshots or redistribution?
No. A password primarily restricts opening, and someone able to open the file can still record its visible content. The tool does not control how you subsequently distribute the file or password. Verify recipient compatibility and use your own document-sharing process.
Why can processing fail even after I enter a password?
Check the password carefully, including unintended spaces, and try opening the source in another viewer. Damaged files, unsupported protection details or insufficient memory can also cause failure. Verify the downloaded document in an independent PDF viewer rather than relying only on a completion message.
